The symbol of the sign of Cancer—the Summer Solstice and moment in time of the Sun’s Northern peak—has been over millennia, the Egyptian scarab, crayfish, crab, snapping turtle, and lobster1. Creatures that come from watery depths, creatures with hard exteriors, creatures that shed and rebirth, creatures that carry their homes with them wherever they go.
It is the season of Cancer that calls us to the liquid bodies of the Seas, the Oceans, the Lakes, the Rivers—all willing and able to receive us, cleanse us, and hold us as extensions of the Mother Matrix.
Cancer is of course representative of all Mothers, Earth and Cosmic alike. She invites us into the safety that is required for healing and inspires us to feel and intuit the correct movements for our path—whether it be forward or back.
One of the great wisdoms of the crab is her ability to know when to retreat. To know when it is time to be in darkness and when it is time to be in light. To know when the shell she has dutifully constructed around her aura has grown too small and is ready to be released. To know when it is necessary to sidestep along the spiral dance and find herself in a familiar place all over again.
[Cancer] is ruled by the Moon whose expansive and contractile nature is expressed by the terms waxing and waning, and is the most fertile or productive of the twelve zodiacal signs. As this silver orb is mistress of the night, so Nature's most occult work-THAT OF THE FORMATION AND FERTILIZATION OF SEED-is carried on under cover of darkness and with the utmost secrecy.2
As I raged and cried into Cancer season, in attunement to an unusually extended luteal phase, I was called into the dark and watery depths of the crab’s native habitat and reminded of the deep wisdom that is found when we do “nothing” but feel everything (hence the late arrival of this season bulletin).
In a time of disordered yang dominance, a reminder of the divinity of yin “productivity” is always welcome.
In ancient lore, Cancer is termed the house of physical conception, while Capricorn, the opposite sign, is concerned with Spiritual conception.3
